Well-known manufacturer of heavy industrial parts plans to move quality control to the next level. Manual measurement of heavy parts can be time-consuming and particulary inaccurate.
Our team performed 3D scanning using the portable laser 3D scanner, ScanTech KSCAN Magic, to deliver digital data of the part for 3D inspection.
The complete project took us 8 hours and can be separated into following parts:
Introduction with the technicians and management of the factory, discussion about the follwing steps, especialy the way of movement with the heavy part
Placing the scanning markers on the surface of the part

Post-processing of data in the scanning software ScanTech Scan Viewer
1. Introduction and planning
In this special project, the plan was the key. The diameter of this part was roughly 1,5 meters (inner diameter) - 2,5 meters (outer diameter), lenght 2,5 meters and weight of the part was 10 tons (!). That is immerse and each manipulation with the part was better then heavy weight-lifting. Our team arrived to the factory one day earlier to check the situation onsite to be sure that everything will go according to the plan.

2. Markers placement
Scanning with portable laser 3D scanners comes with markers as the reference points for the scanning software. The correct proceure is that you place the markers aproximatelly 10 - 15 cm far from each other on the part on flat surfaces. You can probably imagine how many markers did we use in this application. Reference markers play significant role in laser 3D scanning in terms of data accuracy and their importance even grows in such large projects.

3. Scanning with KSCAN Magic
Scanning itself with ScanTech KSCAN Magic is easy job. KSCAN Magic has five scanning modes and one of them is large area scanning, with 11 parallel infrared laser lines, which is able to capture data in field of size 1440mm × 860mm. This mode enables to capture data faster due to large field of view. Scanning of large parts is usually a job for two. It is more time efficient when one man can concentrate just on the scanning itself and second man can watch captured data in the software, guide him and move the laptop / working station (on the troley, if possible). In this special case it was neccessary to rotate the 10-tons part after capturing the data from side.

4. Post-processing of data
The reason of 3D scanning was to capture STL data to compare them with original CAD file to indicate any kind of deviations which might happen during the production of this large part. By post-processing in this case we mean finalizing the scanned raw data to be able export clean STL file, which can be uploaded to any measuring software (GOM Inspect, Geomagic Control X etc.) to perform analysis. We would consider spliting the data into two separate projects in such large aplications.

Scanning of large and heavy parts has always been a bit of challenge. Scanning is usualy performed in manufacturing hall with unstable conditions such as temperature, light, movement of workers around and other apects which are usually not possible predict and control. From this reason, to be able to get a reasonable results, using of portable laser 3D scanner is the best option.
